Tightening the conditions for obtaining citizenship – our recommendation is to submit the applications for citizenship as soon as possible
Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has signed an order requiring citizens to apply for a genuine connection to Portugal, beyond Spanish-Jewish roots. This means that the procedure that was valid until now, according to which citizenship is possible thanks to the approval of the Jewish community and on the basis of family names, will be discontinued. The changes made to the law will not be retroactive – so it will not deny citizenship to those who have already received and been approved, including Roman Abramovich.
This is what Itay Mor, yhe president of the Zionist movement “Over the Rainbow Portugal” told the N12 website: “The draft for the legal change of the Portuguese citizenship law has been lying on the president’s table for about two months. As published in Portugal this morning, the president signed the draft on 8.3, but the draft has not been published, and it is not at all clear what its final wording is. We are in a period of unpredictable changes, so our recommendation is to apply for citizenship as soon as possible. Despite the closure of the activities of the Jewish community in Porto, requests can be made to the Jewish community of Lisbon which is still open to applicants. Our recommendation is not to wait.”
