Ynet website told about the publication of the report of the Jewish community in Porto with the documents proving that the process of issuing approvals for Roman Abramovich was proper and that Abramovich presented evidence that he was a descendant of deportees from Spain and Portugal. The community in Porto has strongly criticized the Portuguese government for not set criteria for proving the origin of citizenship applicants itself, and now doubts the criteria and evidence provided to it by the community.
Itay Mor, the president of the Zionist movement “Over the Rainbow Portugal” told Ynet:
“The evidence in the report was submitted to the Portuguese police as early as a few months ago when the investigation into Roman Abramovich’s citizenship began. Even then, upon receipt of the report, it became clear to investigators that there were no real allegations against the community, and the investigation was expected to end without evidence of improper conduct.
Despite this, the media in Portugal has made itself both a judge and a hangman of the community in Porto and has defamed the important work it does. Authorities used the allegations to pass draconian regulations, in an illegal proceeding, that contradict the original Portuguese citizenship law. All this, even before the investigation ended and the findings were disseminated.
Now, with the publication of the evidence, everyone is witnessing that the whole affair is an initiative of antisemitic elements. It is to be hoped that the government and the legislature in Portugal will recover and not cooperate with those who seek to damage the close and strong bond created between the Jewish community and Portugal.”
