The leading Portuguese economic website Dinherio Vivo published an opinion column by Adv. Itay Mor, president of the Zionist movement “Over the Rainbow Portugal”, about the Jewish community in Portugal and its significant contribution to the country. Capitalists who are interested in investing in the country and creating jobs in it, thus contributing to its economic growth and to strengthening the cultural and historical ties between the two nations.

Thousands of Jews, millions of investments
Since 2013, when the Portuguese Citizenship Law was approved, Portugal has received more than twenty thousand descendants of Jews expelled from Portugal and Spain. And the number is always going up. The Jewish community in Portugal does not stop growing and is only not bigger because the pandemic has put several processes on hold.
But who is this growing community? They are young, educated and in most cases with capital and willingness to invest in a desirable country like Portugal. It is true that the Jewish community is more than a group of investors. It is a community with a rich culture and a vibrant social and family life. But it is also a community that is helping Portugal to grow even more.
With historical and effective links to the country, Sephardic Jews also understand the country’s positive moment and its strategic position in Europe, seeking to add value to the national economy, in more obvious areas such as tourism, even real estate, infrastructure, medical industries, among other sectors.
Just look for evidence of this entrepreneurial movement in newspapers in Portugal. “Luso-Israelis want to invest 200 million by the end of 2023”, “Israelites will invest 70 million in Espinho and create 150 jobs” or “Israelites with 250 million to invest in real estate projects in Porto” are recent news headlines that show the relationship win-win that characterizes the relationship between the Jewish community and the host country. In addition to the clear economic potential, the growth of this community could contribute to strengthening the cultural and historical links between two nations with solid ties, an opportunity that we cannot ignore.
The Jewish community in Portugal is growing day by day and the hope for the future is that it will grow even more and that these old/new Portuguese have the potential to enrich the country’s culture, as well as continue to make investments that contribute to innovation, job creation and economic growth.
