Most of us dream of a work experience in another country through which we will develop new connections and friendships, expand our horizons and experience a new adventure. Portugal is one of the fascinating countries with new job opportunities worth living and working in. Read here about the sites for finding a job in Portugal.
After finding a job, your employer must apply for a Portuguese work permit to the Portuguese labor authorities, if the duration of work is over three months. After approval of a contract or work permit, citizens who do not have an EU passport must apply to:
• Portuguese work visa, if their citizenship requires an entry visa to Portugal or their work lasts less than six months
• Residence permit, if you plan to work in Portugal for the long term
* The type of residence permit you need depends on the type of employment and work.
Short-term Portuguese work visa
This Portuguese work visa is required for short-term contracts lasting less than six months. It is suitable for employees and the self-employed subject to the assessment of the Labor Authority (IEFP). The temporary residence visa can be extended up to one year if you are engaged in:
• Areas of scientific research
• Academic teaching
• Highly qualified professional activity
• Providing training and service instructions by members of the World Trade Organization countries
Long-term Portuguese work visa
This Portuguese work visa is necessary for citizens who do not have an EU passport who intend to work in Portugal for more than six months. As Portugal is located in the Schengen area, the work visa is a long-term Schengen visa (type D) that allows its owners to travel across 26 countries of the Schengen area.
Applying for a Portuguese work permit:
Holders of citizenship of the European Union or the European Free Trade Association should apply for a Residence Certificate only to the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras, SEF) if they have been working in Portugal for longer than three months.
Citizens of a third country will have to apply for a Portuguese work visa at the embassy or consulate in their country, after receiving confirmation that their employer’s application for a Portuguese work permit has been granted.
Along with the Portuguese work visa application form, the following documents must also be provided:
• Passport photo
• Passport and copies of previous visas
• Flight booking details (not always required)
• Medical insurance policy that covers expenses up to 30,000 euros
• Proof of accommodation and employment contract with the employer
The Portuguese work visa is valid for the duration of the work in Portugal, or long enough to apply for a Portuguese residence visa. Submitting applications can take from two weeks to two or three months in practice.
A work visa in Portugal involves two fees, one for the application and the other for the approval (compared to many other countries where the application fees are total and non-refundable).
1. The application fee is 25$.
2. Fee after approval is 85$.
