In the past decade, the population of Portugal has decreased by 2% and now stands at 10,347,892 citizens.
The website Safe Communities Portugal published an article about the population of Portuguese citizens that has decreased by 2% in the last ten years, according to the first data in a report published by the Central Bureau of Statistics at the end of July.
From 2011 to 2021, the population of Portugal decreased by 214,286 people, i.e. by 2% and today it numbers 10,347,892 people. This is the second decade in which Portugal recorded a decline in its population, with the first being in the years 1960-1970.
The population living in the Algarve increased by 3.7%, while the population in the province of Lisbon increased by 1.7%. In the other areas, a decrease in population was observed. In Alentejo it decreased by 6.9% and in Madeira by 6.2%.
In the last ten years, out of 308 municipalities, 257 have registered a decrease in population and only 51 have recorded an increase. The Central Bureau of Statistics also notes that about half of the population living in Portugal is concentrated in only 31 municipalities, located mainly in the Lisbon and Porto regions.

It is possible that these data, along with other considerations, support the government decision to open its gates to Jews, descendants of Spain and Portugal.
